LAWN & ORNAMENTALS
Groover Exterminating Inc. provides lawn inspection and spray services. We spray lawns to control infestations of chinch bugs, armyworms, sod worms, mole crickets, grubs, and fungus. We also provide fertilization including liquid formulations and granular applications.

The most important issue relevant to obtaining a lawn with reasonably low maintenance, which is economically rewarding and visually appealing, is choosing the right type of grass.

The second most important issue is the application of water, and a lawn can be killed by a lack of water or too much water. A lack of water can kill it quickly, and too much water can kill it quickly or over a period of time. Watering should typically be performed about twice per week, and the watering should be adequate to moisten the ground to a depth of about 6 inches. This will help cause the roots to grow deep in search of moisture. Excessive watering motivates the roots to grow near the surface, and the grass plants to be more susceptible to drought conditions or damage caused by disease and insects infestations.

The third most important issue is mowing the lawn at the proper height, providing a regular mowing schedule, and if the mower is used on more than one lawn, the removal of disease, fungus, insects and weed seeds from mower decks and tires. A lawn cut closely promotes conditions where weeds can thrive and choke out the grass plants, but when mown at the proper height the underlying soil is shaded and the conditions for weed seeds to germinate is diminished. No more than 30% of the grass plant should ever be removed at one cutting. A regular mowing schedule should eliminate the removal of too much plant at a single cutting. Removing more than 30% of the plant causes the lawn to be physically weakened, thereby providing an condition where environmental extremes, disease or insects may attack and kill the lawn (sometimes quickly).

Fertilization is the forth most important factor in maintaining a lawn. Properly fertilizing a lawn includes more than going to the hardware store and selecting a couple of bags of the best stuff they have and putting it on the lawn whenever the lawn looks yellow.  A lawn may yellow due to issues other than fertilization, and over fertilization can be detrimental to the overall health of the lawn. In fact over fertilization can lead to the decline of the lawn, by burning, or by promoting excessive thatch build up.

Ideally when a lawn is maintained in optimum condition, pest and disease problems would not be an issue; however, the extreme environment (long hot summers) in Florida often provides the optimum conditions where insect pests and diseases can become established. This is where we can help control insects and fungal diseases in the lawn. Generally by the time you realize you have a problem in the lawn, it may be advanced and a lot of damage may already have occurred. As such, we provide maintenance schedules of fertilization and lawn spray control to interrupt insect growth cycles before they can cause significant damage to your lawn. Some insects that damage lawns (like mole crickets or grubs) are very large.  The best control is preventative treatment while the insects are small and can be killed easily, and before any damage is evidenced in the lawn. This may be months before any sign of damage occurs.  In Florida it is not a question of if you will have a problem, it is simply a matter of when will it occur.

We offer a one time service for do it yourself lawn enthusiasts, or monthly service for contract customers.
